Pune, 18th April 2026: The city is witnessing an intense heatwave, with temperatures touching 41°C over the past week, causing widespread discomfort among residents. Maximum temperatures in several areas have risen above normal levels, with Lohgaon recording 41.5°C and Shivajinagar reaching 40.3°C.

The extreme heat has disrupted daily routines, with roads across both central areas and suburbs appearing largely deserted during peak afternoon hours. On Friday, residents faced harsh sunlight along with intermittent cloud cover, which increased humidity and added to the discomfort.

Several other localities also reported high temperatures, including Chinchwad at 39.8°C, Wadgaon Sheri at 39.5°C, Rajgurunagar at 39.4°C, and Balewadi at 39.2°C. Areas such as Haveli, Ambegaon, Girivan, Hadapsar, the NDA area, and Shirur recorded temperatures ranging between 37.9°C and 38.9°C.

This is the fifth consecutive day of extreme heat in the city. Meteorological indications suggest that the heatwave is likely to continue for at least the next two days. While minor fluctuations in temperatures may occur, no significant relief is expected in the immediate future.

The rising temperatures have also led to an increase in heat-related illnesses. Hospitals across Pune have reported more cases of dizziness, vomiting, diarrhoea, severe headaches, and abdominal pain. Children and senior citizens are among the most affected.

In the past 15 days, around 120 cases of heatstroke have reportedly been recorded, raising concerns among health authorities. Doctors have advised residents to avoid stepping out between 12 pm and 4 pm, stay hydrated, and wear light cotton clothing.

Residents have also been advised to consume cooling drinks such as buttermilk, lemon water, and other traditional summer beverages. Authorities have cautioned against consuming contaminated water, ice, and uncovered food to prevent health complications.

With the heatwave expected to persist, officials have urged citizens to take necessary precautions to reduce health risks during this period of extreme weather.
