Heavy Rain Lashes Pune; IMD Warns of More Showers Till October 3, Dams Nearly Full

Pune, 28th September 2025: After a spell of heavy rain across Pune and surrounding areas on Sunday morning, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall over the next few days, with the Ghat regions likely to receive very heavy to extremely heavy showers. The city and district remain under weather watch as reservoirs continue to brim close to capacity.

IMD Forecast for Pune

According to the IMD, the city will see cloudy skies and rainfall activity throughout the week:

  • September 28 – Thunderstorms with lightning, moderate to heavy rain; extremely heavy rainfall likely in isolated Ghat areas.
  • September 29 – Light to moderate rain; heavy to very heavy rainfall likely in Ghat regions.
  • September 30 – Light rain expected; heavy showers possible in Ghat areas.
  • October 1 – Very light to light rain likely.
  • October 2 – Light to moderate rain forecast.
  • October 3 – Light to moderate rain expected.

Rainfall in Last 24 Hours

In the 24 hours ending at 9 am on September 28, Pune recorded significant rainfall, particularly in Nimgiri and Pimpri-Chinchwad areas:

  • Nimgiri – 85.5 mm
  • Chinchwad – 66.0 mm
  • Rajgurunagar – 57.5 mm
  • Pashan – 42.6 mm
  • Talegaon – 41.5 mm
  • Shivajinagar – 36.9 mm
  • Lavale – 30.5 mm
  • Koregaon Park – 28.0 mm
  • Malin – 28.0 mm
  • Dudulgaon – 27.0 mm
  • Hadapsar – 19.5 mm
  • Haveli – 14.5 mm
  • Baramati – 12.6 mm
  • Daund – 12.5 mm
  • Magarpatta – 10.0 mm

Dams Near Full Capacity

The Khadakwasla dam complex, which supplies water to Pune city, continues to remain almost full following consistent monsoon showers. As of 6 am on September 28, the combined live storage in the four major reservoirs – Khadakwasla, Panshet, Warasgaon, and Temghar – stood at 28.93 TMC, which is 99.24% of total capacity.

Breakup of dam storage and rainfall:

  • Khadakwasla – 24 mm rainfall; storage at 1.81 TMC (91.81%). Water release: 26.90 TMC so far.
  • Panshet – 23 mm rainfall; storage at 10.62 TMC (99.71%).
  • Warasgaon – 23 mm rainfall; storage at 12.79 TMC (99.77%).
  • Temghar – 18 mm rainfall; storage at 3.71 TMC (100%).

No significant inflow was reported in the past 24 hours.

Last year, the four dams together held 29.10 TMC (99.84%), nearly the same as this year.

Outlook

With IMD warning of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in the Ghat regions, authorities are expected to keep a close watch on dam levels and possible water discharge. Citizens have been advised to exercise caution during intense spells of rain, particularly in low-lying areas and hilly regions prone to landslides.
