Pune, 17th May 2021: “The low-level convergence region associated with cyclone Tauktae is now over Mumbai, Pune and Nashik area. This will bring heavy rainfall tonight. Conditions for formations of deep clouds and heavy rainfalls are favourable in these areas of low-level convergence”, said the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

According to IMD, the cyclone will weaken by Tuesday night when it will come closer to landfall in Gujarat. Cyclones normally weaken when it comes over land. There are two reasons for that: 1) land area offers more friction thereby low pressure at the centre gets filled and 2) its energy source is cut off. Over the sea, it gets energy as against land, it does not get energy”, IMD added.

“Considering the forecast, the cyclone will weaken and dissipate on 18 May evening after entering over the land near Porbandar, Gujarat coast”, it mentioned.

Pune to get moderate to heavy rainfall

On Monday Pune city experienced light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy spells in ghat areas. Shivajinagar area received 8.2 mm, Pashan received 9.9 mm and Lohegaon received 6.2 mm.
