Heavy Vehicles Barred on 12 Pune Road Stretches During Ganeshotsav

Pune, 10th September 2026: The Pune City Traffic Police have imposed a round-the-clock ban on heavy and oversized vehicles on 12 major road stretches in the city’s central areas during Ganeshotsav.

The restrictions will remain in force from September 12 to September 26, covering the festival and Ganesh idol immersion period, according to an order issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Dr Sandeep Bhajibhakare.

The decision has been taken to facilitate the safe movement of devotees visiting Ganesh mandals and prevent traffic congestion in the city’s crowded central areas.

“Citizens should cooperate with the Pune City Traffic Police to ensure that Ganeshotsav is celebrated peacefully and traffic movement remains smooth,” Bhajibhakare said in the order.

The restrictions have been imposed under Section 115 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and the relevant government notifications authorising traffic authorities to regulate vehicular movement.

Roads covered by the ban
Heavy and oversized vehicles will not be permitted on the following stretches for 24 hours a day:
Shastri Road: Senadatta Police Chowky to Alka Chowk
Tilak Road: Jedhe Chowk to Alka Chowk
Kumthekar Road: Shanipar to Alka Chowk
Laxmi Road: Sant Kabir Chowk to Alka Chowk
Kelkar Road: Futka Buruj to Alka Chowk
Bajirao Road: Puram Chowk to Gadgil Statue
Shivaji Road: Gadgil Statue to Jedhe Chowk
Karve Road: Nal Stop to Khandojibaba Chowk
Fergusson College Road: Khandojibaba Chowk to Veer Chaphekar Chowk
Jangli Maharaj Road: S.G. Barve Chowk to Khandojibaba Chowk
Sinhagad Road: Rajaram Bridge to Savarkar Chowk
Ganesh Road–Budhwar Road: Panjarpol to Futka Buruj Chowk via Daruwala Bridge and Jijamata Chowk

Emergency and essential-service vehicles, including ambulances, fire engines and police vehicles, have been exempted from the restrictions.
Heavy-vehicle operators have been instructed to use alternative routes during the restriction period. The traffic police said the measures were necessary because large numbers of citizens and devotees are expected to visit Ganesh mandals across central Pune during the festival.

Ganeshotsav begins on September 14, while the main immersion processions are scheduled toward the end of the festival. Pune’s central areas traditionally witness heavy pedestrian and vehicular movement during the celebrations.
