Highways In Pune Rural Record Highest Fatal Accidents In 2022, Over 15k Deaths Reported In Maharashtra
Pune 13th Oct 2023: The Highway authorities of Maharashtra have released statistics of accidents reported on the highways across the state last year. The numbers have raised concerns for Punekars as the district has recorded the highest death toll in highway accidents reported in 2022.
According to the official statistics, a total of 15,224 fatalities have been reported in highway accidents across Maharashtra last year. Out of this, 923 fatalities were reported from Pune Rural, 912 were reported from Nashik rural, 841 from Ahmednagar Rural, 641 from Solapur Rural, 552 from Jalgaon, 534 from Satara, 492 from Nagpur Rural, 462 from Beed, 457 from Aurangabad Rural and 434 were reported from Chandrapur district. These ten districts have contributed to 41% of the total deaths reported across the state in highway accidents.
The highway authorities have recorded a 13% increase in fatalities in the accidents compared to last year. Similarly, an increase of 22% rise in grievous injuries and 13% rise in the total crashes was reported this year. According to the official data, a total of 19,540 people sustained serious injuries while 7,699 sustained minor injuries in the road accidents on highways in the state last year.
In Pune rural, the highest number of 86 fatalities were reported in 39 accidents in December while lowest 60 in 32 accidents were reported in September. Highest number of deaths 359 were reported on National Highway followed while 16 deaths have been recorded on Expressway. The statistics also reveal around 49% of people who died in highway accidents in Pune rural were on two wheeler or three wheelers and majority of these accidents are reported between 6pm to 9 pm.
