Indian Cricket Legend Bishan Singh Bedi Passes Away at 77

New Delhi, 23rd October 2023: Renowned cricketer Bishan Singh Bedi, a legend in the world of Indian cricket, passed away at the age of 77 after battling a prolonged illness. Bedi, affectionately known as “Bishu,” made significant contributions to the sport throughout his life. He managed the Indian cricket team during the 1990 tours of New Zealand and England and served as a National selector and mentor to several talented spinners, including Mahendra Singh and Murali Kartik.

Bishan Singh Bedi is survived by his wife, Anju, son Angad, and daughter Neha. The news of his passing has left the cricketing community in mourning. Sports Minister Anurag Thakur expressed his condolences and noted that Bedi’s demise is a substantial loss to the world of cricket.

Bishan Singh Bedi, born on September 25, 1946, was a former Indian cricketer known for his prowess as a slow left-arm orthodox bowler. He represented the Indian cricket team in Test matches from 1966 to 1979 and was a crucial member of the famous Indian spin quartet. Over the course of his international career, Bedi participated in 67 Test matches and achieved an impressive record of 266 wickets. He also had the honour of captaining the national side in 22 Test matches. Bedi was celebrated not only for his cricketing skills but also for his candid and outspoken views on cricket-related matters. His contributions to the sport were acknowledged with the Padma Shri Award in 1970 and the C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004.

Bishan Singh Bedi’s international career spanned from his Test debut on December 31, 1966, against the West Indies (cap 113) to his final Test match on August 30, 1979, against England. In addition to his Test career, he also played One Day Internationals (ODIs), making his ODI debut on July 13, 1974, against England (cap 2) and concluding his ODI career on June 16, 1979, against Sri Lanka. Over the course of his illustrious career, Bedi secured an impressive total of 273 international wickets, further complemented by thousands of wickets in first-class cricket. His legacy in Indian cricket will be remembered with great respect and admiration.
