IRDAI Proposes Public Registry For All Insurance Policies

New Delhi, 4th September 2026: Keeping track of multiple insurance policies could become easier as the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has proposed creating a Public Insurance Registry (PIR) that would provide a unified view of policy-related information.

The proposed registry is aimed at bringing insurance information spread across different insurers and institutions onto a common digital framework. This could include life, health, motor and other insurance policies.

Under the proposed system, policyholders could get a consolidated view of their insurance records, making it easier to track policies, premiums, renewals and claims. The system could also help people identify old or forgotten policies and make it easier for nominees to trace insurance benefits.

The registry is also expected to improve information sharing across the insurance ecosystem. Insurers, intermediaries, reinsurers, regulators and other authorised entities could use verified information through a common framework.

However, the PIR is not being proposed simply as a central database where all insurance information would be stored. The information could continue to remain with the institution that holds it, while the registry would provide a consistent digital view and enable access under the prescribed framework.

For policyholders, the proposed system could reduce paperwork and repeated documentation while making insurance records easier to access and manage. It could also improve transparency and help streamline services and claims.

At the same time, questions around data privacy, customer consent, security and accuracy of information will be important as the framework takes shape. IRDAI has invited feedback from stakeholders on the proposal, with the consultation process forming part of the next steps for the proposed registry.

The Public Insurance Registry is currently a proposal and is not yet available to policyholders. Its final structure and implementation will depend on the consultation process and subsequent regulatory decisions.
