Is India Becoming Increasingly Unsafe For Women? NCRB Report Reveals A Rape Happens Every 16 minutes in India

Pune, October 2, 2020: Recent incidents and crimes against women have shaken the entire nation to its core. The question which arises is if India is becoming increasingly unsafe for women?

The National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) has released a report on Tuesday known as ‘Crime in India’ 2019. The report states that a woman is raped every 16 minutes in India.

In a recent case, a 19-year-old Dalit girl in Hathras was allegedly gang-raped by four upper-caste men in Uttar Pradesh. The girl died in Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital on Monday while undergoing treatment. This sheds light on the deep-rooted problems which have existed in our society since centuries.

According to the ‘Crime in India’ 2019 report-
· A woman is gang-raped and murdered every 30 hours in India.
· A woman becomes an acid attack victim almost every two days in India.
· A woman is raped every 16 minutes in India.
· Dowry death is still a common occurrence in India and occurs about every hour.
· A woman becomes a target of trafficking every four hours in India.
· Every six minutes, a case in regard to assault with the intention of outraging a women’s modesty is reported.
· A woman faces a rape attempt every two hours in India.
· Every four minutes, a woman is subjected to cruelty or harassment by her in-laws or husband.

Crimes and sexual offences against children have also increased in India. This is a wake-up call for the government to make safety measures more stringent and increase awareness amongst people. Justice should also be expedited with strict punishments for the convicts.
