New Delhi, 20th August 2025: With the September 15 deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) approaching, lakhs of taxpayers are rushing to meet the cut-off. But many often face delays even after filing and verifying their ITR.

Why ITR Processing Gets Delayed
According to tax experts, once an ITR is filed and e-verified, the responsibility of processing lies with the Income Tax Department. The return is processed only after officials confirm that the declared income, deductions, and tax payments match the actual financial records.
If there is any mismatch, the process is delayed, and the taxpayer may even receive a notice from the department for clarification.

Steps in ITR Verification
ITR verification can be completed via Aadhaar OTP, net banking, or by sending a signed ITR-V form by post. After this, the Income Tax Department cross-checks the details with its database.

Since this involves validating income details and tax calculations, processing may take anywhere from a few hours to a month. In most cases, if all declarations match with financial records, the system clears the return quickly through automation.

What If Your ITR Is Still Not Processed?
If an ITR remains pending despite verification, it usually indicates discrepancies between the declared and actual income. In such cases, the taxpayer receives a notice and must make corrections. Failure to respond can lead to the ITR being rejected.

Experts also caution that if taxpayers do not complete e-verification within 30 days of filing, the return is treated as invalid. This not only delays refunds but can also cause compliance issues.

Advisory for Taxpayers
The Income Tax Department has urged taxpayers to file returns early, enter accurate details, and complete verification on time to avoid last-minute complications.
