Kharadi to Khadakwasla, Warje to Manik Bagh: Pune Metro Set for Big Leap

New Delhi/Pune, 31st May 2025: Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Pune MP Murlidhar Mohol held a key meeting with Union Urban Development Minister Manohar Lal Khattar in the capital on Friday to discuss the long-pending expansion of Pune Metro. Mohol said the Union Cabinet has already given the green light for new phases of the metro line, while more proposals await final approvals.
“In view of Pune’s rapid urban growth and rising commuter demand, I met Manohar Lal Khattar ji to discuss accelerating the expansion of Pune Metro,” Mohol said after the meeting. “We had positive discussions on key projects, and I am hopeful that Cabinet-level clearances will follow soon.”
According to Mohol, the Union Cabinet has approved two major metro corridors — Vanaj to Chandni Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi — which will significantly extend the city’s metro reach. He said Maha Metro has already prepared the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs), which were approved by the state government, and received a nod from the Public Investment Board (PIB) on March 11, 2025. The final clearance from the Union Cabinet is now awaited.
“We urged that this proposal be placed before the Cabinet at the earliest. Pune’s existing metro lines are running at full capacity, and further expansion is necessary to keep up with public transport demands,” Mohol said.
In addition to the approved corridors, Mohol also discussed two other proposed lines — the Kharadi–Hadapsar–Swargate–Khadakwasla corridor and the Nal Stop–Warje–Manik Bagh route. Both projects have secured approval from the Maharashtra government and are currently under review by the Inter-Ministerial Committee and PIB.
“Khattar ji showed a positive approach to these proposals. Once the PIB approvals are granted, we expect swift movement to secure Union Cabinet approval,” Mohol added.
He emphasized that the Modi government and the Maharashtra state government, led by CM Devendra Fadnavis, are committed to transforming Pune’s public transport infrastructure.
“Our aim is to roll out the new metro routes quickly and ensure faster connectivity across all parts of the city. The meeting today was an important step in that direction,” Mohol said.
Pune Metro is currently operating two functional lines, and with the city expanding rapidly, the proposed extensions are seen as crucial for easing road congestion and improving urban mobility.
