Kolhapur Airport to get new terminal building with enhanced capacity and world-class facilities

New Delhi, 10th May 2023: Considering the growing passenger traffic growth at the Kolhapur airport, Airports Authority of India has undertaken the work for developing the airport for enhanced capacity and operations of A-320 type of aircraft. The development project with an estimated cost of Rs. 256 Crore includes construction of a new terminal building, extension of runway, construction of new apron and parking bay.

Kolhapur Airport has been identified for RCS operations under UDAN scheme and is presently connected to Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai and Tirupati. Presently, the airport is capable to serve 75 passengers during peak hours, which is much short of the expected load.

To cater to the growing passenger, traffic, the new terminal building is being constructed in an area of 3900 sqm and will be able to serve 300 passengers during peak hours. With 10 check-in counters, the terminal will be equipped with all modern passenger amenities.

The terminal building will be a Four-Star GRIHA rated energy efficient building with sustainability features. The interiors of the terminal building will reflect the art and culture of local culture & heritage. The big archways at the front façade of the new terminal building is influenced and derived from the commonly used arches in the heritage structures like Maharaja Palace, Bhavani Mandap, Panhala Fort of Kolhapur city.

Apart from this, a new Air Traffic Control Tower is also being constructed to cater for future traffic growth. Parking area with capacity for 110 cars, 10 buses are also part of the development activities.

Work for Extension of Runway is completed. More than 60% of Construction of terminal building work is completed and likely to be completed by October, 2023.

Kolhapur is a historical city situated on the banks of Panchganga river in the southern part of Maharashtra. Kolhapur is known as Dakshin Kashi or Kashi of the South due to its religious history and the antiquity of its shrine Mahalakshmi. The city has tremendous passenger potential as the city is also a hub for agriculture-based products, sugar, casting foundries, education, medical tourism, automobile spare parts & textile business which attracts air travellers in large numbers.

The new world-class terminal building of the airport will enhance the connectivity to this industrial city, boosting tourism industry of the region. The increased connectivity will create new employment opportunities for the local community & provide access to better educational and medical facilities.
