Kolkata Pandal Stampede Death Toll Rises to 19; CM Adhikari Announces Rs 25 Lakh Aid, Government Jobs for Victims’ Families
Kolkata, 18th October 2026: The death toll in the stampede at a Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata has risen to 19. Following the tragedy, Chief Minister Adhikari has announced financial assistance of ₹25 lakh and government jobs for the families of those who lost their lives.
The state government’s announcement aims to provide financial support to the bereaved families affected by the incident, which has raised concerns over crowd management and safety arrangements at large religious gatherings.
The stampede reportedly occurred amid a heavy rush of devotees at the pandal, resulting in multiple casualties. The rising death toll has intensified concerns over the arrangements made to manage large crowds during festive celebrations.
As part of the relief package, the government will provide ₹25 lakh in compensation to the families of the deceased and offer government employment to eligible family members.
The incident has once again highlighted the importance of effective crowd-control measures, proper entry and exit arrangements, and coordination between event organisers, police personnel and emergency services to prevent similar tragedies at large public gatherings.
