Kothrud: Breathing problem, irritation in eyes after chemical tanker accident at Chandni Chowk

Pune, May 28, 2020: The incident took place at Chandni Chowk when a truck carrying acid leaked. As a result, the citizens of Bhusari Colony area in Kothrud started suffering from watery eyes and breathing problems. Locals have informed the fire brigade and police that the incident took place around 10 pm.

MLA Siddharth Shirole tweeted, “A tanker carrying Hydrochloric Acid has met with an accident in Chandani Chowk area, #Pune. Situation is in control, procedures are been followed by authorities present on site. There is no reason to worry. I appeal to citizens to remain indoors & not venture out of their home.”

The tanker (MH 46 BM 3659) was heading towards Nira-Baramati from Mumbai, the driver told police. After the incident, two fire tankers rushed were rushed to the spot. Firefighters tried to reduce the smell and acid by throwing soil. The police immediately closed the road and stopped the traffic to avert further disaster. Fortunately, no damage was done. Fire Brigade officers said that it was acetic acid.

Meanwhile, rumours were circulating on social media that gas was leaking from the tanker and people were falling unconscious. However, no official confirmation has been received.

Some people were suffering from watery eyes and breathing problem due to acid leakage. This created an atmosphere of fear among the Kothrudkars. However, the tanker could not be dispersed as the fire brigade intercepted the tanker in time.
