Chaten (Sikkim), 2nd June 2025: A devastating landslide triggered by continuous heavy rainfall struck the Indian Army camp at Chaten in the Lachen district of Sikkim on the evening of June 1, 2025, around 7:00 PM, claiming the lives of three personnel and leaving six others missing. The Indian Army has launched an intense rescue operation under difficult conditions to search for the missing individuals.

The landslide, caused by days of unrelenting rain, swept through the military encampment with alarming force, burying parts of the site under debris and disrupting communication lines. Responding immediately, Indian Army teams initiated search and rescue missions, navigating through dangerous terrain and unpredictable weather to reach those affected.

Four individuals have been rescued so far, sustaining only minor injuries, and are currently receiving medical care. However, the tragic loss of three lives has cast a pall over the region. The fallen have been identified as Havaldar Lakhwinder Singh, Lance Naik Munish Thakur, and Porter Abhishek Lakhada. Their mortal remains have been recovered with utmost respect and dignity by fellow soldiers.

As of now, six Army personnel remain unaccounted for, and the Army has ramped up its rescue efforts, deploying additional resources and specialized teams to assist in the ongoing operation. Despite the continuous downpour and challenging mountainous landscape, troops continue their search, guided by a shared sense of duty and brotherhood.

In a statement, the Indian Army expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and assured that all necessary support will be extended to help them during this time of grief. “Every effort is being made to support the bereaved families and ensure that those still missing are brought back safely,” a spokesperson said.

The incident has once again highlighted the growing vulnerability of high-altitude regions to extreme weather events, especially during the monsoon season. The Indian Army, known for its operational resilience in harsh conditions, continues to show unwavering commitment to the welfare of its personnel.

This tragedy is a stark reminder of the risks our soldiers face—not only in combat but also while serving in some of the most inhospitable terrains in the world. Yet, even in the face of natural calamities, the spirit of the Indian Army remains indomitable—defined by courage, duty, and an unshakable will to protect.
