In July and August this year, there was heavy rainfall in the Krishna river basin, which caused the floods in Sangli and Kolhapur districts. There were a large number of human casualties and property damages reported in the floods. Till date, 6.45 lakh people have been shifted to safer locations in Kolhapur and Sangli districts, which are worst affected following the heavy rains in western Maharashtra and Konkan region.

The Maharashtra government has constituted a panel which will analyse the problem of the Bhima and Krishna basin floods with the help of modern technology; find out whether there was a backwater effect of Almatti dam of Karnataka in Maharashtra and submit its feedback; suggest concrete steps to tackle, reduce and avoid flood situations in the future. The committee has three months to submit its report.
