Lonavla Skywalk Project to be Completed by June 2027: Ajit Pawar

Pune, 23rd February 2025: Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has instructed the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) to ensure the timely completion of the ₹909-crore Lion and Tiger Point development project in Lonavla. The ambitious project, which includes the construction of Maharashtra’s longest glass skywalk, is scheduled to be completed by June 2027.
The 125-meter-long, 6-meter-wide glass skywalk will link the popular tourist spots—Lion’s Point and Tiger’s Point—providing visitors with a unique aerial perspective of the surrounding landscapes. PMRDA Chief Engineer Ashok Bhalkar stated that the design takes inspiration from the Grand Canyon Skywalk in the United States, adding that it is expected to be a major attraction for tourists.
Project Approvals and Land Acquisition
According to PMRDA officials, the project received in-principle approval in September 2023 for acquiring 20.90 hectares of forest land. The PMRDA has already transferred ₹5.2 crore to the forest department as net present value for the acquired land.
The entire project will be developed in Kurwande village, Lonavla. Apart from the glass skywalk, the plan also includes constructing a 90-meter-long bridge between the two viewpoints.
During a recent review meeting, Ajit Pawar emphasized the importance of completing the project within the stipulated deadline.
“With all major approvals in place, there should be no delay. This skywalk will significantly boost tourism in Lonavla,” he said.
Investment and Infrastructure Development
The tourism development plan for the project includes:
- ₹213.1 crore for infrastructure development
- ₹695.9 crore for public-private partnership (PPP) initiatives
PMRDA Chief Engineer Bhalkar mentioned that the construction is expected to begin this year and that the state government is likely to provide funds for infrastructure development.
To compensate for the forest land acquisition, alternative land parcels measuring 10 hectares in Suwadi and 11.3 hectares in Kondivade have been identified. Additionally, the acquisition of 3,378 square meters of private land is in its final stages.
Officials believe that the completion of this project will establish Lonavla as a premier tourist destination while also generating significant employment opportunities for local residents.
