Pune, 20th December 2022: The former mayor of Pune City, Murlidhar Mohol, announced that the esteemed Maharashtra Kesari wrestling tournament will be held in Pune from the 10th to the 14th of January in 2023.

The announcement was made in a press conference in Shivaji Nagar, Pune. He further clarified that the tournament will be organized by a temporary ad hoc committee, following the dissolution of the Maharashtra State Wrestling Association (MSWA). Also present at the press conference were the newly appointed MSWA president MP Ramdas Tadas, the chairman of the ad hoc committee Sanjay Singh and the president of the Wrestling Organisation of Pune, Sandip Bhondve.

The Maharashtra State Wrestling Association, led by NCP chief Sharad Pawar, was dissolved in June this year by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) following multiple complaints against the body. The WFI is headed by Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, a Lok Sabha MP from the BJP. However, a November ruling by Bombay High Court overturned the decision and held that the committee headed by Pawar shall carry out its duties till the end of its tenure. Despite this, ad hoc committee has still continued to hold matches across the state.

Explaining this, Sandip Bhondve said, “The committee was dissolved after the ruling but an inquiry was started on the 16th of November, causing a new ad hoc committee to be formed.”

Attempting to allay concerns about the legitimacy of the tournament, Tadas claimed that the tournament was moving forward with the consent of both the WFI and Pawar.

The much awaited tournament will be held in Kothrud, Pune next year and will be inaugurated by Olympians Bajrang Punia, Yogeshwar Dutt and Sakshi Malik.
