Pune, 4th March 2023: Additional Director General of Police and Inspector General of Prisons and Correctional Services, Amitabh Gupta, has issued an order granting permission for students from government-recognized universities and colleges to visit prisons for research purposes, subject to certain conditions. Except for subjects that are objectionable to the prison department, students can research on any other matters. However, only a maximum of 35 students per college will be allowed to visit the prison for educational reasons.

According to officials, these visits will provide students with hands-on knowledge of the various rehabilitation and reintegration activities of the inmates. Students of social work and law colleges will benefit from these field visits as they will be able to apply their knowledge in the real world. This will also prepare them for their future roles in providing legal assistance to prison inmates.

Additionally, these visits can help researchers to study problems faced by prisoners, their mental and emotional conditions, and other aspects of prison life. Research institutions such as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences and Maharashtra Institute of Mental Health, Sassoon Hospital, Pune will also conduct research studies on the prison population. A detailed study of the challenges faced by prisoners in Maharashtra, especially emotional and mental health, will be conducted in coordination with the Maharashtra Prisons Department. This research will help to identify problems and generate new knowledge. It will also help to shed light on the positive aspects of the prison system and bring about reformative changes.
