Maharashtra tops in Khelo India, players win 256 medals

Mumbai, Jan 23, 2020: Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has congratulated all the players of Maharashtra team for attaining first position in tally of medals in recently held Khelo India Youth Games.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has said, `It is a matter of proud that Maharashtra has become winner for the second consecutive year in these competitions. The young players of Maharashtra would be provided with all kind of assistance for continuing such bright performance.’

The Khelo India Games organized by Union Ministry of Youth welfare and Sports started at on January 9th at Guwahati in Assam. There were 6500 sportspersons from various states who participated in this competition. In the final medal tally Maharashtra won 256 medals and retained top position with 78 gold, 77 silver and 101 bronze medals. Maharashtra had taken lead in the tally of medals right from the beginning of this competition and Maharashtra won maximum medals in aquatics.

The competition is held to provide an opportunity for the youngsters under 17 and under 21 so that the players coming from school and college level get a platform to prove their merit. There were 590 sportspersons from Maharashtra who participated in 19 sporting events and proved their merit. The sports and youth welfare directorate in the state provided various facilities to these players and also held practise sessions for them which proved fruitful for players and they crossed medal tally of over 200 medals.
