Monsoon Tourists Flock to Lonavala, Bhushi Dam Overflows Amid Safety Warnings
Lonavala, 22nd June 2025: The early arrival of the monsoon has turned Lonavala and Maval into a magnet for tourists, with large crowds seen over the weekend, especially on Sunday. The Bhushi Dam, one of the region’s most popular attractions, is now overflowing, drawing visitors eager to enjoy the white, gushing waters.
Compared to last year, rainfall has been significantly heavier this season, enhancing the natural beauty of the Sahyadri ranges. Tourists from Mumbai and Pune have been arriving in large numbers to experience the lush greenery and cascading waterfalls.
Despite a recent district magistrate order restricting access to all major tourist spots except Bhushi Dam, many tourists were seen flouting the ban and venturing into restricted areas. Authorities are increasingly concerned as safety remains a major issue in the region.
Just days ago, a tragic accident at Kundamala in Talegaon claimed four lives and left over 50 injured when an iron bridge collapsed under the weight of visitors. Since then, the local administration has been urging tourists to exercise caution.
“Every year, accidents occur near Bhushi Dam and surrounding waterfalls due to risky behavior,” a police official from Lonavala said. “Many people, especially youngsters, ignore warnings and try to explore unsafe areas.”
The Sahyadri mountain range, now carpeted in green, is dotted with white waterfalls. But officials warn of rockfalls and slippery terrain, especially near steep valley edges and under waterfalls. “People should avoid stopping under falling water or climbing rocks. These are scenic but dangerous zones,” the official added.
To manage the influx, Lonavala Police have deployed personnel at key tourist spots and set up barricades in certain areas. Yet, reports suggest that crowd control is proving difficult, and some tourists continue to behave recklessly.
Authorities are once again urging visitors to prioritize safety. “The monsoon season brings unmatched beauty to the region, but enjoying it responsibly is crucial,” said a spokesperson from the district administration.
With more rain expected and monsoon tourism in full swing, the administration is monitoring the situation and may enforce stricter measures if safety protocols are not followed.
