MP Medha Kulkarni Demands Renaming of Pune Railway Station After Peshwa Bajirao
Pune, 23rd June 2025: BJP Rajya Sabha MP Medha Kulkarni has demanded that the Pune Railway Station be renamed after the legendary Maratha warrior Peshwa Bajirao I. She also emphasized that the upcoming redevelopment of the station should reflect Pune’s rich historical legacy.
In a recent interview with TV9 Marathi, Kulkarni stated that although Pune is steeped in heritage, there is no visible reflection of the city’s glorious past at its main railway station. “The redevelopment of Pune Railway Station is necessary. But while doing so, the station and its surroundings must mirror the grandeur and historical identity of Pune,” she said.
Kulkarni further asserted that the station should be named after Peshwa Bajirao I, who significantly expanded Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s vision of Hindavi Swarajya. “Peshwa Bajirao’s reign extended from Cuttack to Attock. His residence, the iconic Shaniwarwada, symbolized that empire, and Pune was its administrative and cultural center,” she added.
She also noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has envisioned that important national infrastructure, such as railway stations and airports, should embody local and national history. “Just like the PM’s vision for other parts of the country, Pune too deserves a railway station that pays tribute to its proud heritage,” Kulkarni concluded.
