Mumbai Man Arrested for Cheating Pune Woman IT Engineer of Rs 34 Lakh on Pretext of Marriage

Baner, 17th February 2025: Baner police have arrested a man from Mumbai for allegedly cheating a 25-year-old computer engineer from Pune of ₹34 lakh under the false promise of marriage. The accused has been identified as Saish Vinod Jadhav (25), a resident of Saibabanagar, Shell Colony Road, Chembur, Mumbai.
According to the police, the victim, who stays in a hostel in Baner and works for an IT company in Balewadi High Street, had registered on a matrimonial website in 2023. Jadhav contacted her through the platform and expressed keen interest in marrying her.
In May 2023, Jadhav traveled to Baner to meet the woman for the first time, and they had lunch at a local restaurant. He later visited her again, during which he claimed that both his parents had passed away and that his only brother was working in Dubai. Believing his story, the woman continued interacting with him.
Over time, Jadhav spun a web of lies to manipulate the woman financially. He falsely claimed that a friend had cheated him and that he would be jailed if he did not pay off a debt. To gain her trust, he assured her that they would be married soon. Additionally, he borrowed an expensive mobile phone from her, citing that his own device was broken.
Under pressure, the woman sent him large sums of money online, including ₹15 lakh that she borrowed from senior colleagues in her IT company. She also took a loan from a private financial institution to fulfill his repeated financial demands. Over a period of one and a half years, Jadhav extracted a total of ₹33.82 lakh from her.
When the woman started pressing him for marriage, he began giving vague and evasive responses. Realizing she had been cheated, she approached the Baner police and lodged a complaint. Following an investigation, the police tracked down Jadhav and arrested him.
The case is currently being investigated by Assistant Police Inspector Anil Kekan.
This incident comes close on the heels of a similar case in Pune, where a young doctor from Bibvewadi allegedly committed suicide after being deceived by a man on the pretext of marriage. The victim, a doctor from Sangli, was reportedly lured by another doctor, who took money from her under false pretenses. When she confronted him about their marriage, he revealed that he was already married.
The emotional and financial distress led the young doctor to consume poisonous medicine in a hospital in Bibvewadi. The Bibvewadi police later arrested the accused doctor from Navi Mumbai.
