Mumbai Pune Expressway Grinds to a Halt: Massive Traffic Jam Spanning Kilometers

Lonavala, 1st June 2024: A massive traffic jam has ensued on the Mumbai Pune Expressway since early this morning. The surge in vehicles heading towards Pune has caused a significant slowdown, resulting in a traffic queue spanning approximately eight to nine kilometres from Amrutanjan Bridge to the Khalapur Toll Gate.
To alleviate this congestion towards Pune, vehicles bound for Mumbai are being halted near the Khandala tunnel, allowing dedicated time blocks for traffic heading in the Pune direction across all six lanes. Furthermore, heavy vehicles destined for Mumbai are being diverted at the Lonavala exit.
The influx of tourists, particularly during the weekend, has contributed to the congestion, as many opt for private vehicles to enjoy their holidays. Additionally, the closure of certain train routes has further exacerbated the strain on road traffic.
With the remaining days of summer vacation, numerous families are embarking on trips to cooler destinations such as Mahabaleshwar, Panchgani, Lonavala, Kolhapur, and Nashik. Moreover, the route to the Konkan coast via Karad and Kolhapur has witnessed a significant increase in traffic volume, adding to the congestion on the Mumbai Pune Expressway.
As a result of these factors, the traffic jam on the Mumbai Pune Expressway has persisted since the early hours of the morning.
