Pune, 6th June 2025: In a major step to address mounting traffic congestion, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has put forth a proposal to widen the Mumbai-Pune Expressway from six to ten lanes. The move is expected to significantly enhance travel between Mumbai and Pune, two of Maharashtra’s busiest cities.

The 96-kilometre expressway, connecting Kalamboli in Navi Mumbai to Kiwale near Pune, has served as a key transport corridor since its opening in 2002. It currently handles around over 60,000 vehicles on weekdays, with the number crossing one lakh on weekends. Annual traffic volume has reportedly been increasing by 5 to 6 percent, prompting urgent calls for expansion.

The proposed upgrade, estimated to cost ₹14,900 crore, would cover 83 kilometres of the stretch not included in the ongoing “missing link” project in the Khandala Ghat section. That 13-kilometre portion is already undergoing development to expand it to 14 lanes.

At present, the average travel time between Mumbai and Pune is about two hours. However, on weekends and during holidays, the journey can take up to five hours due to traffic congestion. MSRDC officials believe that the ten-lane expansion will significantly reduce delays, especially on peak days, and lead to smoother and faster movement of vehicles throughout the week.
