Lonavala, 21st December 2025: Traffic congestion gripped the Mumbai–Pune Expressway in the Borghat stretch from Saturday morning (December 20) as a surge in holiday travel led to long queues of vehicles. The combination of a weekend and the Christmas holiday season resulted in heavy traffic movement, particularly between the Adoshi tunnel and the Khandala exit. Traffic jams were also reported today.

A sharp increase in private vehicles, tourist buses, and heavy vehicles heading towards hill stations such as Lonavala and Khandala caused major traffic slowdowns. The narrow curves, steep uphill and downhill sections of the Borghat ghat, along with ongoing road maintenance work, further reduced vehicle movement, leaving motorists stranded for hours.

Traffic officials said poor lane discipline, sudden halts by heavy vehicles, and minor vehicle breakdowns at several points worsened the congestion. In some instances, motorists attempting to overtake from the wrong side added to the chaos, leading to complete bottlenecks.

The highway traffic police deployed additional personnel and implemented traffic regulation measures to ease the situation. However, due to the continuous inflow of vehicles, congestion kept building up, making traffic management a challenge.

Officials warned that traffic on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway is expected to remain heavy over the next few days due to the Christmas holidays and weekend rush. Motorists have been advised to plan their travel in advance, avoid peak hours if possible, and follow traffic rules to ensure smoother movement.

Meanwhile, the Borghat and Khandala traffic police continue to struggle to maintain traffic flow amid the sustained holiday rush, urging commuters to cooperate and exercise patience while travelling.
