NEET UG 2025: Delhi High Court’s Big Decision on “Holding Exams Twice a Year “

New Delhi, 13th February 2025: The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG) is conducted once a year in pen-and-paper mode(PPT). Exam centers are set up across India and abroad to accommodate lakhs of students appearing for the test. After the exam, the answer key is released, allowing candidates to verify their responses. This exam is crucial for admission into MBBS, BDS, and other undergraduate medical courses. Since many students take this exam, there have been frequent demands for changes in the exam pattern to provide better opportunities.
Delhi High Court’s Decision: Will NEET UG be conducted twice a year?
The Delhi High Court has given its verdict on the petition demanding that NEET UG be held twice a year. The court clearly stated that the decision to conduct the exam once or twice a year lies with the administration and the government, not the judiciary. The bench of Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela emphasized that petitioners are free to present their request to the concerned authorities, but the final decision rests with the government and the education ministry.
The court also pointed out that other major competitive exams, including UPSC and various government recruitment exams, are also conducted only once a year. Therefore, the frequency of NEET UG exams is purely an administrative policy matter.
Notably, a teacher had filed the petition requesting that NEET UG be conducted twice a year, similar to JEE Main. The petitioner argued that JEE Main is conducted twice a year, which allows students to improve their scores and reduces exam pressure. Therefore, medical aspirants should also be given two opportunities to enhance their performance.
However, conducting the exam twice a year could be a logistical and administrative challenge, requiring additional resources and planning. The government must carefully evaluate all aspects before making a decision.
As of now, NEET UG is conducted only once a year. Students should stay updated by regularly checking the official website for any changes or announcements.
