New Year 2026: Pune Police Warn Pubs, Bars of Action if Drunk Patrons Drive
Pune, 31st December 2025: Ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations, Pune Police have announced stringent measures to prevent drunk driving, placing clear accountability on pubs, bars and hotels to ensure that intoxicated customers do not drive after consuming alcohol.
Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said hospitality establishments must make arrangements for alternative transport, including designated drivers or cab services, for patrons who consume alcohol on December 31. “If a person drinks at a pub or bar and is later found driving under the influence, the responsibility will also lie with the establishment. Strict action will be taken in such cases,” Kumar said.
The police commissioner said enforcement will be intensified across the city, particularly in areas expected to witness large crowds. Additional police personnel will be deployed at Fergusson College Road, M.G. Road, Chandni Chowk, Nal Stop, Amanora and other key locations. Mobile surveillance vans will also be used to monitor movement and identify violations in real time.
Kumar said Pune Police have already taken action against around 6,500 drunk driving offenders so far this year as part of an ongoing crackdown. “On New Year’s Eve, our checks will be far more rigorous. The number of daily checkpoints will be increased from 20 to nearly 60 across the city,” he said, adding that the police will follow a zero-tolerance policy against drunk driving and related offences.
Pune Police have appealed to citizens to celebrate responsibly and cooperate with law enforcement, warning that violations of traffic and safety rules during New Year celebrations will invite strict legal action.
