Pune, 9th June 2026: In a move aimed at enhancing public safety and strengthening civic infrastructure in Pune’s newly merged villages, a proposal has been submitted to install solar-powered LED streetlights on key roads, internal lanes, public spaces, parks, and bus stops. The proposal has been placed before the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Standing Committee for consideration.

The proposal comes amid growing concerns over the lack of basic civic amenities in the 32 villages recently incorporated into PMC limits.

Residents of several villages have repeatedly raised complaints about inadequate street lighting, leaving large areas in darkness after sunset.

According to civic representatives, the absence of proper illumination on roads and public spaces has emerged as a major safety concern. Poor visibility has not only affected daily commuting but has also heightened concerns about crime and public security, particularly among women, senior citizens, and school-going children.

To address the issue, corporators Rupali Dhadwe and Dr Dada Kodre submitted a proposal on June 4 seeking the installation of solar-powered LED lighting systems across the newly merged villages. The proposal emphasises the need to adopt environmentally sustainable and energy-efficient solutions while improving civic infrastructure.

The proposal notes that many of the merged villages continue to depend on conventional electricity supply and frequently experience power disruptions. During such outages, entire neighbourhoods are left without street lighting, affecting traffic movement and public safety. Solar-powered LED streetlights equipped with battery backup systems are expected to ensure uninterrupted illumination even during power failures.

Apart from improving safety, the project is expected to deliver long-term financial and environmental benefits. Civic officials believe solar-powered lighting can significantly reduce the municipal corporation’s electricity expenditure while contributing to lower carbon emissions. The longer lifespan of LED lights is also expected to reduce maintenance and replacement costs.

Civic representatives have further pointed out that better-lit roads could help reduce accidents and deter criminal activities such as theft, robbery, and vandalism. Improved lighting would also enhance the effectiveness of CCTV surveillance systems installed in public areas.

The proposal further states that the installation of solar-powered streetlights would support the expansion of urban infrastructure in the newly merged villages and help bridge the gap between core city areas and newly added localities. Improved public amenities are expected to enhance residents’ quality of life and strengthen public confidence in the civic administration.

The proposal is currently awaiting approval from the Standing Committee. Once sanctioned, the Pune Municipal Corporation is expected to make the necessary budgetary provisions and implement the project in a phased manner.
