Pune, 13th January 2025: Former Minister of Women and Child Development of India, Maneka Gandhi, made headlines with controversial remarks during an event in Pune. Addressing environmental concerns and non-vegetarian food consumption, Gandhi claimed that those who consume non-vegetarian food are “traitors to the country.” She urged people to adopt vegetarianism, citing its harmful impact on wildlife and the environment.

The event was held to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Social Responsibility Group. Other notable attendees included Shekhar Mundada, Vanita Borade, retired Colonel Dr. Nawaz Sharif, Ashish Goswami, Vijay Warudkar, and D Bhaskar.

Gandhi stated, “Most forest cutting in the world is happening in India. In the last 33 years, 66 hectares of forest land have been lost. The changing lifestyle and increasing non-vegetarian consumption are harmful to wild animals. That is why people should stop eating non-vegetarian food. People eating non-vegetarian food are traitors to this country.”

She continued by explaining that products made from wild animal leather, animal smuggling, poaching, and meat exports are resulting in deforestation. Gandhi argued that as animals lose their habitats, they are forced to enter human settlements. For the safety of wild animals, she advocated for a ban on non-vegetarian food consumption and meat exports.

Gandhi also commented on the state of zoos in the country. She pointed out that while there are various types of wild animals in these zoos, the employees often lack proper training to care for them. As a result, the animals do not receive adequate care.
