Pune, 3rd November 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to introduce a paid parking system on a pilot basis from December to address growing issues of traffic congestion and haphazard parking across the city. The civic body has confirmed that the technical groundwork is nearing completion and the system will be operational by the end of November.

Under the new plan, paid parking will be implemented on five major city roads — both in the central areas and suburbs. The proposed parking charges are Rs 4 for two-wheelers and Rs 20 for four-wheelers. The facility will operate from 8 am to 10 pm, while parking will remain free after 10 pm.

For years, permanent parking of vehicles on busy stretches has been a major concern for both citizens and traffic police. Following repeated complaints from the traffic department, the PMC expedited the long-pending proposal.

Originally approved in principle back in March 2018, the resolution on paid parking has now gained traction again. Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram recently reviewed the proposal with senior traffic police officials and decided that “no parking” zones will be designated within 50 meters of key junctions, while certain areas will be converted into paid parking stretches.

Dinkar Gojare, Head of the Special Projects Department, said, “The proposal for the paid parking system will be presented before the Standing Committee, and the tender process will be completed next week. After finalising all technical procedures, we will implement the system on a pilot basis from next month.”

The initiative aims to streamline vehicular movement, discourage illegal parking, and ensure more efficient use of road space in commercial and high-traffic zones.

Roads Identified for Paid Parking (Pilot Phase):
Junglee Maharaj Road and Namdar Gopalkrishna Gokhale Road (Fergusson College Road)
Laxmi Road
High Street, Balewadi
Viman Nagar Road
Bibvewadi Road

If successful, the system will be extended to other parts of the city in subsequent phases, PMC officials said.
