Pune, 24th June 2025: In a major step toward improving passenger safety—especially for women—the Indian Railways has announced the installation of panic buttons at major railway stations, including Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. The initiative, driven by the Railway Board, aims to offer quick response support in emergencies such as overcrowding, medical situations, or instances of harassment.

The panic buttons, once pressed, will instantly alert the Railway Protection Force (RPF) control room. Using CCTV surveillance, the control room will assess the situation and deploy RPF personnel to the spot within minutes. Assistance will be provided based on the nature of the emergency.

“Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad stations are being surveyed for panic button installation. We expect the system to become operational within the next two to three months,” confirmed Priyanka Sharma, Senior Divisional Security Commissioner, Pune.

This development follows successful trials and deployment across Mumbai suburban railway stations. Pune, with its high volume of daily passengers and train departures, was selected for the second phase of the rollout.

How the Panic Button System Works:
When pressed, the panic button sends an immediate alert to the RPF control room.
Live CCTV feeds help security personnel verify the situation.
RPF officers patrolling the platforms are notified instantly and dispatched to the scene.
Passengers receive help within a few minutes.

Emergency Scenarios for Use:
Overcrowding on platforms or footbridges
Fights or unlawful activity among passengers
Medical emergencies
Instances of harassment or insecurity, especially concerning women

Railway officials say the initiative will enhance safety and instill confidence among commuters, ensuring rapid action during emergencies. The panic button system forms part of broader efforts to modernize security infrastructure at railway stations across the country.
