New Delhi, January 10, 2021: An organization of people arrested during the Emergency period in the country has filed an intervention petition in the Supreme Court. The petition has demanded the court to declare them as a freedom fighter.

The All India Democracy Fighter Joint Action Committee has demanded it to be part of a petition filed by 94-year-old Veran Sarin. He moved the apex court declaring the Emergency declared by the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975 as unconstitutional.

Sarin filed a petition declaring the 1975 Emergency unconstitutional and demanding compensation of Rs 25 crore. Sarin had demanded compensation for his property being seized during the Emergency. Significantly, during the Emergency in 1975, hundreds of people were kept in custody.

Demand to provide facilities to those arrested or detained during the Emergency has also been put through several forums earlier. Now the All India Democracy Fighter Joint Action Committee has moved the court in this matter.
