Pigeon Racing Takes Flight in Pune with Exciting Competition

Pune, 21st May 2023: The Pigeon’s Friends Association in Pune organized a pigeon flying competition, which culminated in a prize distribution ceremony held on the evening of 20th May 2023 in Pune Camp.

Several esteemed guests attended the event, including V. Satya (President, Pigeon’s Association, Chennai), Arun Kumar (Income Tax Officer, Chennai), Ali Daruwala (Advisor of National Council for Minorities), Ganesh Ghosh, Shailendra Jadhav, Shashikant Balwadkar, and Salim Shaikh.

Pigeon racing, also known as pigeon flying, is a competitive sport that involves specially bred homing pigeons. These pigeons are trained for long-distance and high-speed flights using selective crossbreeding techniques. The competition in Pune has been held annually since its inception in 2010.

During the ceremony, Ali Daruwala was felicitated by the guests for his recent appointment as an advisor to the National Commission for Minorities. Daruwala expressed his support for such competitions and emphasized the importance of obtaining national recognition for the sport.

The competition featured various categories, ranging from 150km to 1000km. A total of 800 pigeons participated, showcasing their flying prowess. Mustapha Patel emerged victorious in the Pune-Jalna flying competition, covering a distance of 275km. V. Satya, President of the Pigeon’s Association, spoke about the global interest in pigeon flying competitions and highlighted their prevalence in states such as Kerala, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.

Arun Kumar underscored the legality of these competitions and emphasized the importance of preparing and nurturing pigeons for specific distance challenges. Shailendra Jadhav provided insights into the use of GPS tags and other technical aspects of the competition.

The successful event highlighted the enthusiasm and passion of pigeon enthusiasts in Pune and showcased the growing popularity of pigeon racing as a sport.
