PMC Clears Encroachment on 24-Metre DP Road Near Kad Nagar Chowk in Mohammadwadi; Traffic Relief Expected
Reported by Shoaib Tadvi
Mohammadwadi, 16th October 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has demolished an encroachment on a 24-metre-wide Development Plan (DP) road near Kad Nagar Chowk in Mohammadwadi, clearing the road corridor for public use. The action is expected to improve connectivity and ease traffic movement in the Mohammadwadi–Undri area, where residents have repeatedly raised concerns over congestion and road obstructions.
The demolition drive was carried out by the PMC’s Building Permission Department under the guidance of City Engineer Aniruddha Pawaskar and Superintendent Engineer Pravin Shende. Executive Engineer Santosh Lanjekar, Deputy Engineer Avinash Kamthe and Junior Engineer Asmita Kute also participated in the operation.
According to the civic administration, the action was aimed at removing obstructions from the planned road corridor and restoring the space for public use. Encroachments along Development Plan roads can reduce the available road width, restrict vehicle movement and contribute to congestion, particularly in rapidly developing residential areas.
Kad Nagar Chowk Faces Persistent Traffic Congestion
The Mohammadwadi–Undri corridor has witnessed growing traffic pressure due to rapid residential development and increasing vehicle movement. Kad Nagar Chowk and nearby junctions have been identified as congestion-prone stretches, with road encroachments and other obstructions contributing to traffic bottlenecks.
In April 2026, Pune Traffic Police officials inspected Kad Nagar Chowk and nearby junctions following complaints about traffic congestion. Officials identified narrow road widths, encroachments, high-tension electricity poles and overhead cables as some of the factors affecting traffic movement. Coordination between the PMC and the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) was proposed to address these issues.
Residents of Mohammadwadi and Undri have also raised concerns about inadequate road infrastructure and obstructions affecting daily commutes. The removal of the encroachment near Kad Nagar Chowk is expected to help improve access along this stretch.
Part of Wider Road Infrastructure Efforts
The latest demolition comes amid broader efforts to improve road connectivity in Pune’s southern suburbs. The PMC has sanctioned ₹80 crore for widening roads up to 24 metres along key routes, including Kad Nagar to Undri Chowk, Kad Nagar to Mohammadwadi, Shri Ram Chowk to Handewadi and stretches near Desai Hospital and Nyati Estate, according to a report by The Times of India.
Separately, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change granted in-principle approval in September 2026 for the diversion of 0.5 hectares of forest land for a proposed 24-metre DP road in Mohammadwadi and Kondhwa. The proposal includes the felling of 99 trees and remains subject to compliance with the prescribed conditions and final forest clearance.
The PMC said the demolition near Kad Nagar Chowk forms part of its efforts to enforce Development Plan provisions and remove obstructions from public roads.
With the encroachment removed, commuters and residents are expected to benefit from improved access along the cleared stretch. However, the extent of traffic relief will depend on the removal of other bottlenecks and the continued improvement of road infrastructure across the Mohammadwadi Undri corridor.
