Camp, 7th October 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will take up the cleaning of major roads in the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) area, despite the cantonment falling outside the civic body’s jurisdiction. The move is expected to cost the PMC around ₹2 crore annually.

The PMC’s solid waste management department will undertake regular cleaning of major roads in the cantonment area. Additional Municipal Commissioner Prajit Nair said the decision was taken as garbage lying along roads in the cantonment affects the overall cleanliness of central Pune.

Although the cantonment is not part of the PMC limits, it is located in the heart of the city and is frequented by residents as well as people visiting Pune. The civic administration said garbage remaining uncleared in the area creates an impression of poor cleanliness across the city.

“The cantonment area has several important government offices and is regularly visited by dignitaries. Uncleanliness there can create a misunderstanding about the PMC’s cleanliness work. To maintain the city’s image as clean and well-maintained, the PMC has decided to clean the major roads in the cantonment area,” Nair said.

Major government offices in cantonment area
The Pune Cantonment area houses several important government offices, including the Divisional Commissioner’s Office and central offices of various state government departments.

Ministers, MLAs, MPs and other senior officials frequently visit the area, in addition to the large number of citizens who travel through it.

PMC officials said garbage had been accumulating along both sides of several major roads in the cantonment area for some time. Since the area lies outside PMC limits, its routine cleaning is not normally handled by the civic body.

However, the administration noted that people visiting the city generally perceive the cantonment as part of Pune, making the cleanliness of its roads relevant to the city’s overall appearance.

Cantonment Board gives approval

The PMC administration has held discussions with Pune Cantonment Board officials regarding the proposed cleaning arrangements. The cantonment administration has agreed to the regular cleaning of major roads, paving the way for the PMC’s health department to begin the work shortly.

The decision will place an additional financial burden on the PMC since it will be spending public funds on an area outside its jurisdiction. The civic administration, however, has justified the expenditure by citing the location of the cantonment in central Pune and the presence of several key administrative offices and high-traffic roads.

The PMC has recently continued to focus on road-cleaning and garbage management, including action against agencies found failing to maintain required cleanliness standards.
