PMC’s Billing Blunder: 75-Year-Old Man Issued Rs 10.76 Lakh Water Bill

Pune, 16th March 2025: In a shocking incident, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) mistakenly issued a water bill of ₹10.76 lakh to a senior citizen from Shaniwar Peth. Despite raising a complaint, the 75-year-old Govind Gore has yet to receive a satisfactory response from the authorities.
A few days ago, Gore received a message from PMC, informing him of outstanding water bill arrears. As a diligent taxpayer who has always paid his annual water bill on time, he was stunned to see the massive amount of ₹11.5 lakh in dues.
Upon closer inspection, Gore discovered that the bill number was incorrect, and the address mentioned belonged to Shaniwar Peth Nava Pul, whereas his actual residence is at Bawdekar Tekadi, Shaniwar Peth. However, since his mobile number was linked to the erroneous bill, the system falsely registered the arrears under his name.
Disturbed by this massive discrepancy, Gore filed a complaint with the Municipal Commissioner and the Water Supply Department, demanding an immediate cancellation of the incorrect bill. He also urged the suspension of the officers responsible for the error.
“A fake bill has been generated, and I have been sent a notice to pay ₹11.5 lakh. Despite complaining, I haven’t received any concrete response. They keep saying they will make corrections, but my blood pressure shot up after seeing such a massive amount. If something happens to me due to this stress, will the Municipal Corporation take responsibility?” Gore questioned.
Despite multiple complaints, PMC has yet to issue a formal clarification or resolution on the matter.
