Pune, 16th May 2025: Pune and its surrounding areas have been experiencing continuous pre-monsoon showers for the past three days, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted similar weather conditions for the next four days. The city has been placed under a ‘Yellow’ alert, with forecasts of light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.

Since the onset of the pre-monsoon showers, heavy rainfall has been reported in areas such as Kothrud, Sinhagad Road, Hadapsar, Vishrantwadi, Aundh, Vadgaon Sheri, and Baner. On Thursday (15th May), the skies remained cloudy throughout the morning, with rainfall commencing around 3 pm.

The downpour has resulted in a slight drop in maximum temperatures, providing some relief from the prevailing heat. Pune recorded a maximum temperature of 35.6°C and a minimum of 23.8°C on Thursday. Over the next four days, temperatures are expected to dip further, with the maximum likely to hover around 33°C.

The IMD has also warned of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 km/h in Pune and surrounding regions. On Friday (16th May), the maximum temperature is expected to drop slightly to 35°C, while the minimum temperature will likely remain around 23°C.

Across Maharashtra, pre-monsoon activity has intensified over the past week. The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain over the next five to six days across all four sub-divisions of the state. While a significant drop in temperatures is not anticipated, some areas may witness a minor decrease of 1-2°C over the next few days.

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon has advanced further into parts of the southeast Arabian Sea, Maldives, southern Bay of Bengal, Andaman Islands, and the Andaman Sea. Conditions are favorable for the further advancement of the monsoon over the next three to four days.

A cyclonic circulation currently located over north interior Karnataka and adjoining areas at 1.5 km above sea level is expected to bring rain to various parts of the state over the next five to six days.

In Konkan and Goa, excluding Palghar, moderate to heavy rain is likely in the coming days. Marathwada districts such as Beed, Latur, and Dharashiv are also expected to experience thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. In Vidarbha, isolated areas may receive light to moderate rainfall accompanied by gusty winds, prompting the IMD to issue a ‘Yellow’ alert for the region.

Residents of Pune and surrounding areas have been advised to stay alert as pre-monsoon showers, thunderstorms, and lightning are expected to persist for the next four days.
