Pune: 13-Year-Old Boy Drowns in Swimming Pool; Questions Raised Over Safety Measures
Uruli Kanchan, 12th June 2026: A 13-year-old boy tragically drowned while swimming at a private pool in Koregaon Mul village in Haveli taluka of Pune district on Wednesday afternoon. The incident has sparked grief and concern in the locality, with residents questioning the adequacy of safety measures at the facility.
The deceased has been identified as Yash Mahesh Gaikwad (13), a resident of Hingangaon in Haveli taluka.
According to police, Yash’s father, Mahesh Tukaram Gaikwad (41), who works in the private sector, had taken his son to the Swami Samarth Swimming Tank in Koregaon Mul at around 2:30 pm to learn and practice swimming.
At approximately 3 pm, Mahesh Gaikwad went near the edge of the pool to watch his son swim. Yash was seen swimming at that time.
However, about ten minutes later, when the father looked for his son again, he could not find him in the pool. Alarmed, he immediately alerted the swimming coach and began searching for the boy. The father, along with others present at the facility, searched the bathrooms, changing rooms and surrounding areas, but Yash could not be located.
Meanwhile, another child swimming in the pool became suspicious and dived to the bottom. He found Yash lying motionless underwater. The boy was immediately pulled out and rushed to a private hospital in Uruli Kanchan.
However, doctors examined him and declared him dead before treatment could begin.
Based on a complaint lodged by Yash’s father at Uruli Kanchan Police Station, police initially registered the case as an Accidental Death (AD). Assistant Police Sub-Inspector Saste is conducting the investigation.
The incident has raised serious concerns among local residents, especially as swimming pools attract a large number of children during the summer vacation period. Residents have questioned whether adequate supervision was in place at the facility.
Citizens have demanded a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident and whether any negligence on the part of the swimming pool management contributed to the boy’s death.
Locals have also urged the Uruli Kanchan police to investigate the availability of lifeguards, safety protocols and monitoring arrangements at the swimming pool.
Further investigation is underway.
