Wanowrie, 30th June 2026: A 17-year-old tempo driver allegedly drove recklessly to evade a traffic enforcement drive in Pune on Tuesday, colliding with several vehicles before being intercepted near the 15 Number Signal. Police have initiated legal action against both the juvenile driver and the vehicle owner.
According to the Pune Traffic Police, the incident occurred during a special enforcement drive against vehicles with tinted windows and fancy registration plates. Traffic personnel from the Wanowrie Division alerted other teams after the tempo driver ignored orders to stop and sped away.
Acting on the alert, traffic police attempted to intercept the tempo (MH 42 AR 4246) near Vaiduwadi. However, the driver allegedly continued driving at high speed. After a chase, police managed to stop the vehicle near the 15 Number Signal.
During the pursuit, the tempo reportedly brushed against three to four vehicles, causing minor damage. Following the interception, some members of the public allegedly assaulted the driver before traffic police personnel intervened and escorted him safely to Hadapsar Police Station.
Police identified the driver as a resident of Chaufula, Kedgaon in Pune district.
DCP (Traffic) Sandeep Bhajibhakare said, “The driver is a 17-year-old juvenile. As per Section 110 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), we are registering a case against the vehicle owner. Traffic violations involving minors and reckless driving will be dealt with strictly.”
Police said the affected motorists left the spot after confirming that only minor damage had been caused to their vehicles.
Officials added that the Hadapsar Police are handing over the juvenile driver and the vehicle to Wanawadi Police Station for further legal action. Under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), a case is also being registered against the vehicle owner for allowing a minor to drive.
