Pune, 19th May 2023: There are a large number of carvings at Barsu in Rajapur. Therefore, it has come to light that if an oil refinery project is set up in Barsu, around 170 carvings will be endangered. Therefore, a serious problem has arisen regarding the preservation of the mysterious carvings that represent the culture of prehistoric times.

A total of eight carving sites, including carvings in Barsu village, have been included in the provisional list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This gave rise to the hope of preservation and conservation of carvings. However, now it appears that about 170 carvings on Barsu are in danger due to the proposed oil refining project.

The preliminary information is that the refinery project will take place in the area of six villages. It includes Barsu, Solgaon, Devache Gothane, Sogamwadi, Goval, and Shivane. Work has been going on for the last ten years regarding carvings in this area.

A scholar informed that when this area was studied, about 170 carvings were found. The carvings are important to study and understand that period. Also, since the stones on the surface are porous, the rainwater goes underground and is available through wells. Therefore, this area is also important in terms of water.
