Pune: 20-Year-Old Engineering Student Jumps from 15th Floor in Wakad; Police Arrest Friend for Abetment

Wakad, 17th February 2025: A tragic incident has come to light in Pimpri Chinchwad, where a young woman studying engineering took her own life by jumping from the 15th floor of a building. The victim, identified as Sahiti Kalugotala Reddy (20), was a third-year engineering student at D.Y. Patil College of Engineering in Nigdi Pradhikaran.

The Wakad Police, who initially registered the case as an accidental death, have now arrested Pranav Rajendra Dongare, a resident of Akurdi, on charges of abetment to suicide. The incident occurred on the evening of 5th January in Wakad.

Days after the incident, Sahiti’s friends visited her father and helped unlock her phone using her password. Three voice recordings were discovered on the device, addressed to her parents, her friends, and her lover, the accused Pranav.

Sources revealed that investigations uncovered a romantic relationship between Sahiti and Pranav, her classmate. However, the complaint alleges that Pranav took advantage of Sahiti’s affection and subjected her to repeated physical and mental torture.

Based on the evidence found and the subsequent investigation, the police have concluded that Sahiti’s suicide was a result of the torture she endured. As a result, they have registered a case of abetment to suicide against Pranav Dongare and taken him into custody.

Assistant Police Inspector Gajjewar from Wakad Police Station is investigating the matter under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 2) Vishal Gaikwad, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Wakad Division) Sunil Kurade, and Senior Police Inspector in charge of Wakad Police Station Nivrutti Kolhatkar.

Senior Police Inspector Nivrutti Kolhatkar told Punekar News, “The suicide incident happened on 5th January. According to her father’s complaint and evidence from voice recordings, the accused was arrested on 13th February. Although it’s not yet clear whether there was a romantic relationship, there was definitely a friendship between them.”
