Pune: 35,000 migrant workers return to their hometowns

Pune, May 15, 2020: Till yesterday 28 special trains carrying 35,163 labourers from Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and Bihar were sent from Pune division. Divisional Commissioner Dr Deepak Mhaisekar gave this information in a press conference on Thursday.

Dr Mhaisekar said a total of 28 trains have departed from Pune division, 11 for Madhya Pradesh, 11 for Uttar Pradesh, one each for Uttarakhand, Bihar and Tamil Nadu, and three for Rajasthan. Three trains from Pune division are scheduled for Madhya Pradesh on May 15, with a total of 3,600 passengers expected. Out of these, three trains have been planned from Pune station.

Also, three trains have been planned for Uttar Pradesh, which is expected to carry 4,312 passengers. Out of these, one train has been planned from Pune railway station and two from Kolhapur railway station. A train is planned for Bihar from Kolhapur station and 1456 passengers will be sent. For this, district administration, police department, concerned tehsil office and officers and employees of the railway department have played an important role in this.

Pune city police officials said that in the last two days they made arrangements for 3865 workers who were stranded in different parts of the city, reach the Pune railway station on time for boarding trains to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Social Policing Cell of Pune city police and IPS Officers Wives Welfare Organisation (IPSOWO) Pune, provided Amul tetra milk and other food items to the passengers. It was ensured they adhere to social distancing and wear the mask.
