Pune, 29th November 2024: The Pune Traffic Police have intensified their crackdown on traffic rule violators, taking action against more than 35,000 drivers for various offences this year. By the end of November, action was initiated against 30,927 drivers, including 3,341 caught riding triple seats and 634 charged with drunk driving.

According to the Traffic Police, a significant number of serious accidents in Pune result from driver negligence. Around 850 traffic personnel are deployed across the city in two shifts to manage traffic at key intersections and enforce road safety regulations. Despite these measures, violations like driving on the wrong side, using mobile phones while driving, triple-seat riding, and failing to wear seatbelts remain widespread.

Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar emphasized that drivers found guilty of severe violations, such as drunk driving and reckless behavior, will face strict penalties. “Unruly drivers will not only face fines but also have their vehicles impounded, and their driving licenses suspended for six months,” Kumar stated.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Amol Zende, revealed that over 2,500 individuals were caught for drunk driving this year alone. In the first phase of their campaign, the traffic police sent a proposal to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to suspend the licenses of 500 offenders for at least six months.
