Pune: 4 Lakh Households With PNG Access Asked to Give Up LPG Cylinders by October or Face Supply Cut

Pune, 3rd September 2026: Around four lakh households in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad that have access to piped natural gas (PNG) but continue to use LPG cylinders will have to register for a PNG connection by October, failing which their LPG supplies could be discontinued, officials said.

The move comes as authorities seek to push households towards PNG in areas where the network is already available. Under the Essential Commodities Act and the LPG Control Order, LPG supplies can be restricted to households where PNG infrastructure has been provided but remains unused.

Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) officials said PNG infrastructure has reached around nine lakh households in the Pune region, of which nearly five lakh have started using the fuel. The network has been extended to around 6,500 housing societies, but nearly four lakh households in these societies are yet to obtain or activate PNG connections.

Residents have been asked to complete the registration and connection process during September and October. Officials said around five to six per cent of residents continue to resist shifting from LPG to PNG despite the network being available in their societies.

MGL officials said the pace of new PNG connections has also declined. While 150 to 180 connections were being provided daily during January and February, the average over the past six months has been around 500 a day, with the numbers showing a further decline. The highest single-day figure recorded so far was 671 connections.

The company is providing domestic PNG and compressed natural gas (CNG) connections in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, as well as Talegaon, Chakan and Hinjewadi.

The details were shared at a press conference by MGL Managing Director Girija Shankar, Commercial Director Major Shankar Karajagi and Director Bagheshri Mathadkar. Officials said the transition to PNG was being encouraged in view of the availability of the network and the need to reduce dependence on LPG cylinders.

The issue of LPG availability had gained attention during supply disruptions following the Russia-Ukraine conflict, when many households in Pune began opting for PNG.
