Pune, 13th August 2023: An extensive crackdown has been launched against infamous gangs that have been sowing terror across various areas of the city. This concerted effort has sent shockwaves through the ranks of these criminal elements. Taking a stand against the rampant looting of jewelry, a decisive action has been executed against the Dnyaneshwar Chavan gang operating in the Wanwadi locality.

With 16 cases registered against them, the two culprits have been involved in 8 criminal activities. This marks the 47th major operation under stringent Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA) by Police Commissioner Retesh Kumaarr.

The key individuals identified are Dyaneshwar, also known as Mauli Bhikaji Chavan (22 years old, hailing from Devachi Uruli Mulgaon-Khuneshwar, Mohol, district Solapur, and the leader of the gang), and Gajanan Dattarao Borade (30 years old, residing in Hivarkar Mala, Saswad).

The criminal activities included a case wherein a mangalsutra worth Rs 25,000 was snatched from a woman’s neck on June 8th, in the vicinity of Kedari Garden in Wanwadi. This incident led to the subsequent investigation and identification of accused Dnyaneshwar Chavan and his accomplice as the perpetrators.

With a tally of 16 registered cases and a collective engagement in 8 offences, Senior Police Inspector Bhausaheb Patare submitted a proposal for invoking MCOCA against the gang to Additional Commissioner of Police Ranjan Kumar Sharma. Consequently, Police Commissioner Retesh Kumar took resolute measures against the gang.

The modus operandi employed by the accused involved targeting lone women, forcibly snatching gold mangalsutras and chains. Their actions were calculated to instill fear in the hearts of women. Employing various disguises and utilizing motorcycles to evade detection, the two criminals have perpetrated serious offences across different parts of the city.
