Pune: 66 Potholes, 23 Injured And One Dead In Five Months in Lohgaon

Pune, 29th September 2026: The poor condition of roads in Lohgaon, which was merged with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) in 2017 along with 10 other villages, has increasingly become a safety concern for residents. Potholes, narrow roads and encroachments are making it difficult for motorists to navigate the area.

In the five months from April to August, 23 two-wheeler riders were injured after skidding on potholes within the jurisdiction of Lohgaon police station. While some suffered minor injuries, others sustained serious injuries. During the same period, one two-wheeler rider died after skidding on a pothole, while three other two-wheeler riders were killed in separate road accidents.

According to the police, 66 potholes have been identified on roads in the Lohgaon area, with repeated accidents reported at several locations. During the monsoon, rainwater accumulates in the potholes, making them difficult for motorists, particularly two-wheeler riders, to spot.

“Twenty-three incidents of two-wheeler riders being injured after skidding on potholes were reported in the past five months. In addition, one two-wheeler rider died after falling due to a pothole,” said Manisha Patil, senior police inspector, Lohgaon police station.

Residents said several roads in the area have deteriorated despite Lohgaon being brought under the PMC nearly a decade ago. Large potholes, mud and construction debris have made commuting particularly difficult during the monsoon.

The responsibility for maintaining roads wider than 12 metres lies with the PMC’s central road department, while roads narrower than 12 metres are maintained by the respective regional offices.

“Roads wider than 12 metres are maintained and repaired by the central department, while roads narrower than 12 metres come under the jurisdiction of the regional offices,” said Rohidas Gawhane, superintendent engineer, road department.

Apart from the pothole-related fatality, three two-wheeler riders have died in separate vehicle accidents in the area over the past five months. The incidents have heightened concerns among residents over the safety of roads in Lohgaon, particularly for two-wheeler riders.
