Pune: After Student Agitation, SPPU Eases Stand On Campus Protests, Says Requests Will Be Considered Promptly
Pune, 5th November 2026: The agitation by various student organisations against restrictions on protests at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has led to a positive outcome, with the university management council deciding to promptly consider requests from students seeking permission to hold demonstrations on the campus.
The decision was taken at a management council meeting on Wednesday (November 4), following demands from student organisations to withdraw the circular imposing restrictions on protests. The university has clarified that it does not intend to curb students’ freedom of expression and that permission requests will be considered positively and without delay.
Several student organisations had staged a sit-in protest on the university campus on Monday (November 2), opposing the restrictions. They alleged that the circular imposed unnecessary conditions on students’ right to protest and amounted to an attempt to restrict their freedom of expression.
The protesting organisations argued that students have a constitutional right to hold protests on the university campus and decide the issues, timing and manner of their demonstrations. They also questioned the university management council’s authority to impose restrictions on student protests and demanded that the circular be withdrawn immediately.
The issue was discussed at length during Wednesday’s management council meeting. Following the meeting, University Registrar Dr Praful Pawar issued a press statement explaining the decision.
According to the statement, the university will promptly take up requests from students seeking permission to hold protests and adopt a positive approach while considering them. However, the university has also stressed that demonstrations should not cause inconvenience to other students or interfere with security arrangements.
The administration has specifically directed that security arrangements across the campus, particularly at the main entry gates, should be maintained without creating obstacles for students.
