Pune, 9th May 2024: As the general Lok Sabha elections approach for the Pune and Shirur constituencies on May 13, authorities are taking proactive measures to ensure smooth and peaceful polling processes.

All commercial shops, restaurants, bars, and other non-essential services within 100 meters of the polling stations have been directed to remain closed. This directive aims to safeguard public peace and property and prevent any potential disruptions during the electoral proceedings.

The order, issued by Pune’s Joint Commissioner of Police, Pravin Pawar, underscores the importance of maintaining a conducive environment for voters to exercise their democratic rights without interference or intimidation.

Under the jurisdiction of the Pune Police Commissionerate, which encompasses areas such as Wadgaonsheri, Shivajinagar, Kothrud, Parvati, Pune Cantonment, and Kasba Peth, as well as Shirur and Hadapsar assembly constituencies within the Pune Lok Sabha constituency, these measures are expected to impact a significant number of establishments.

Specifically, the directive applies to 2017 polling booths in the Pune Lok Sabha constituency and 708 polling booths in the Shirur constituency. Implemented under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), 1973, the order aims to prevent any potential misuse of the vicinity around polling stations for campaigning or other activities that could disrupt the electoral process.

Effective from 12 midnight on May 12 until the conclusion of the polling process, these precautionary measures are designed to create a secure and conducive environment for voters to cast their ballots free from any undue influence or disturbances.

As the electoral preparations intensify, authorities are urging cooperation from the public and stakeholders to ensure the successful conduct of the Lok Sabha elections in Pune and Shirur constituencies. With these proactive steps in place, the focus remains on facilitating a fair and transparent electoral process that upholds the principles of democracy.
