Pune: Balewadi Locals Raise Alarm Over Public Drinking, Harassment Near Schools
Balewadi, 27th November 2025: The Balewadi Welfare Federation, along with Shri Khanderav Pratishthan, has submitted a formal representation to the District Excise Department regarding the public nuisance caused by a liquor shop near Mamta Chowk in Balewadi.
Residents have complained that customers frequently consume alcohol in the open near metro construction barricades. Empty bottles are discarded in public areas, and incidents of public urination have been reported. Vehicles are often parked improperly along the busy road, leading to congestion and safety concerns.
The issue has raised alarm due to the shop’s proximity to SKP Educational Campus, Rabindranath Tagore School, and Bharati Vidyapeeth School. Students, parents, women, senior citizens, and daily commuters regularly use this stretch, making the situation particularly distressing. Women have reportedly faced harassment and discomfort due to the behavior of intoxicated individuals.
Although residents have repeatedly lodged complaints with Baner Police Station and action has been taken on several occasions, the nuisance resumes once the police presence is withdrawn.
A delegation including Ganpatrao Balwadkar (President, Shri Khanderav Pratishthan), Ramesh Rokade, Moreshwar Balwadkar, Vaibhav Aadhav, Dafedar Singh, Ashish Kotamkar, Advocate Rupali Raykar, and Sunil Galankar submitted the representation to District Excise Superintendent Atul Kanade. The department has assured appropriate action to resolve the issue.
The Federation and Pratishthan stated that if the disruption continues and citizens’ concerns remain unresolved, they will consider legal action and peaceful protests to ensure a safe environment for residents.
