Pune, 14th March 2021: United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) and Bank of Maharashtra officers association has notified a two-day strike from 15 March to protest against the proposed privatisation of two state-owned banks. Nearly 8 lakhs employees will be participating in this strike.
According to the unions, privatisation will put an adverse impact on the small and middle-class people in the country. It will also have a great impact on banking in rural areas. It will decrease the interest rate on bank deposits. There will be a huge impact on an educational and business loan and this will put an impact on students and youth who wish to start their own businesses. Consumers shall also have to pay additional hidden fees.
“The PSUs are always in supporting roles for many government policies like startup India, Pradhanmantri Mudra Yojna, Housing schemes, various schemes for senior citizens, etc. The public banks hold 79 percent of account holders under Jandhan Yojana which is about 33.5 crores account holders are from public banks. For a private bank, the ratio is only 2.99 percent. Yet the government wishes to privatise the PSUs which is not fair. Therefore we have called this strike.” was the statement made.
